Herbs Glossary

After my transition to the US, first change that had a striking impact on me are few names of food items which I have been eating right from my childhood under a different identity.
Let me list out all of them:
  • Desi - USA
  • Chole/Kabuli chana - Chik peas/Garbanzo beans
  • Green chillies/mirchi - Jalapenos/Finger hots
  • Capsicum - Green/Bell/Orange/Sweet Peppers
  • Bendi/Bindi/Ladies fingers - Okra
  • Coriander leaves/Dhaniya - Cilantro
  • Tulasi leaves - Basil
  • Palak - Spinach
  • Curd/Dahi - Yogurt
  • Icecream - Frozen Yogurt
  • Prawns - Shrimps
  • Basen - Chik pea flour
  • Bombay Ravva - Suji
  • Methi - Fenugreek leaves
  • Saunf/Sonp - Fennel Seeds
  • Jeera - Cumin seeds
  • Beetroot - Beets
  • Spring Onions - Scallion/green onions
  • Sambar Onions - Shallots/pearl onions
  • All Purpose Flour - Maida
  • Hing - Asafoetida
  • Dal - Lentils
  • Cup cakes - Muffin
